NORTH PORTLAND FESTIVAL TAKES DEFINITE AIM AT YOUTH RALLY FOR EDUCATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-
PORTLAND, OR (July 19, 2010) - On Saturday, September 11th 12pm - 5PM, the youth department of Celebration Tabernacle Church in North Portland will be teaming up with the community development organization PROPER, to hold a rally for education in Kenton Park.  The rally will unite local artists, businesses and organizations - as well as churches from the inner city and the suburbs - to boost awareness and support for education in Portland.

The event coincides with the 20th anniversary of PROPER community festivals in the North Portland area.  People Reaching Oppressed People Expecting Restoration (PROPER) seeks to improve communities through pro-active communication and greater awareness by generating open dialogue and lasting relationships between local businesses, organizations, churches and individual people. PROPER holds various community events throughout the year, including Thanksgiving Feeds and Annual PROPER Festivals in both Portland and St. Louis. Most PROPER festivals include booths from local businesses, churches and organizations, free food, family entertainment, local talent and local speakers.

With reports surfacing that the graduation rate of Portland Public Schools has dropped to 53% and budget cuts continuing to increase, the PROPER team decided to focus one of their two summer events on the pressing issue of education in Portland Public Schools.  Partnering with the youth department of Celebration Tabernacle, PROPER hopes to reach a younger generation and begin a dialogue about their thoughts and concerns for their own future.  In addition, the PROPER team is excited to give students a valuable experience in community development and leadership through the process of planning the event.

The event aims to get as many organizations involved as possible, with a special challenge to Churches and faith-based organizations.

"Our goal of the rally is not at all to push religion on or into public schools, " says Celebration Tabernacle's Senior Pastor, Elbert MondainĂ©, "But rather to call the Church as a whole to a place of responsibility and support in the community.  There was a time when the local Church was one of the greatest resources to the community, and it's time we get back to that."

For more information about the event, or find out ways to be involved, contact Mackenzie Doyle 971.219.0868 or mdoyle@ctoregon.org.

Scott Belsky: Don't Let Your Genius Go Unnoticed

About This Presentation
Particularly in the creative world, there is a stigma around self-marketing. Many of us believe that our talents should speak for themselves. On the contrary, Behance founder Scott Belsky argues that we must take it upon ourselves to ensure that others recognize our strengths.

Editor's Note: The Joshua Bell experiment Scott mentions was conducted by the Washington Post.

Parents Influence Teens’ Attitudes Toward Substance Abuse

“Teens’ behavior is strongly associated with their parents’ behavior and expectations, so parents who expect their children to drink and use drugs will have children who drink and use drugs.”
—Joseph A. Califano, Jr., chairman of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA)
